Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
There’s a video doing the rounds on social media at the moment.

A male parking warden is issuing a ticket to an ambulance that has parked on a double yellow line outside a Tesco’s. He is getting abuse from various onlookers and being told by everyone that he can’t possibly ticket an ambulance

The female paramedic comes out of Tesco and explains she’s been on shift since 6:30am and wanted to stop and get some water

The ticket enforcer tells her that because she isn’t on a call this isn’t acceptable and issues her a ticket

What’s the morally right thing to do? Does the paramedic have the right to park on a double yellow during her break to get a drink? Or does the same rule apply to her as it does to any other council employee? Would it be acceptable if it was a doctor between home visits in his own car?

I’m actually not sure what the answer is

If everybody in the department is on performance related pay, and (one of) the criteria is "Number of tickets issued per month", then it's not that hard to deduce that traffic & road safety was not the main driver (yes, I KNOW) here.

Yes Alfs but what I, in fact probably we, are both wondering is why someone up the food chain didn't say "Hang on a minute..."

Private firms can't clamp can they?

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
I know this isn't the point of this thread, but isn't it only the council or police that can legally issue parking fines?

Normally these private firms actually clamp your vehicle where it is leaving you with little choice but to pay in order to get it removed.

Surely if all they've done is issue a ticket though you can just tell them to fuck off.

Russ, please stop posting sense. Just let them scream and shout completely ignoring those who actually understand how these things work.

All Emergency service vehicles, not just ambulances will be able to log off for break. How do these drama queens think the crew can go and have a dump if they need to?

Oh sorry, you'll just need to shit in your pants because you are on call?

yes they were. And a Paramedic stated the same on here earlier. They are only allowed to ignore parking restrictions under emergency situations. Not whilst on a break getting something to drink. Ambulance are logged on and off with their base and so the phone staff know who to assign jobs to. When on a break they don't get assigned jobs.

So, yes, they were abusing the fact that they were in an ambulance.

Not saying I agree with it but I can see the logic of them getting the ticket as they had as much right to park there as you and I. The driver used the ambulance as a reason to break the parking rules.

The parking guy felt that as it wasn't an emergency they never had any right to be there. That's his call. As I said, a quick word to the driver would've avoided all this but you can't slate the bloke for doing his job properly.

That Parking attendant should be locked up!!

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
A Paramedic posted earlier on this thread and suggested that the driver would find it difficult to argue that they should have parked there and will probably end up paying the fine themselves.

I'll side with the bloke who actually knows what they are talking about and say that the driver was in the wrong to park where they did and the parking attendant was not in the wrong issuing the ticket.

the moral debate is another issue and I personally wouldn't have issued the ticket but that would have been me using my discretion which might not be in the remit of the parking wardens job.

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
Russ.
Of course they weren’t abusing their position. They are on call and had been, for 6 hours. The vehicle is too wide for a parking bay and they need to be able to get away fast.
Police, ambulance and fire vehicles are allowed to park on double yellow lines. They don’t have to be attending an emergency.

Im more concerned with the fact the traffic warden who job it is to deal with the general public, could only string a couple of sentences together. Any one had any dealing with the Nigerians working in Wimbledon???? Christ, you need a translate to under stand what they are ranting about!!!!

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
At the end of the day the ambulance driver abused their position and vehicle they were in to park on the yellow line.

They weren't attending an emergency and weren't there awaiting details of an emergency. By their own admission they were there to go into a shop.

I have nothing but respect and praise for emergency services and the people that work within them but they should not be able to park where they like when they like due to the job that they do.

For me, I think the parking guy should have waited until they come out and just had a quiet word and explained they shouldn't do that if they are not on an emergency. However, that's not any criticism of him. He chose to do his job properly and they had no right to be parked there.... Just like any of us if we parked there.

I think the person to blame here is the driver.

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
One of my pals from Devon sent me details of a case of a policeman nicking a volunteer "blood bike" rider. The rider was on the charity owned - Devon Freewheelers - dayglo coloured bike equipped with official flashing blue lights and sirens to deliver emergency blood and medical supplies.

Somehow a policeman, his superiors and presumably CPS officials elected to send this officially approved man for trial for "unproven" speeding when the police officer stated he had to "drive at 105mph to catch him up..."

It was thrown out of court. What the fuck has happened in England?

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
They go around in twos so one should've stayed in the vehicle in my opinion.

The warden is right, they were just getting lunch so not on a job but probably didn't consider that if they get called they need to leave asap.

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
Never really got all the shit with parking tickets, I have only got three in my life and all three of them i knew i had parked somewhere i shouldn't.

As for this case, the car park was full, so i think she could have been given a break by the warden. Parked like a proper cunt though. Also, if she only wanted water, why didnt she pop into a petrol station? Not really buying all this, that 20 seconds walk could save a life bullshit either.

Both sides dont come out of this that well tbh

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
Although the warden processed the ticket, the ticket company issued a statement saying they wouldn’t be taking action.

It was parked incorrectly, the warden was only doing his job, but he could have just let it go.... but we know why he didn’t

Actually, when you really think about it, what she doing driving the ambulance in the first place?

No wonder she didn't park it properly!

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
The warden should have offered to do the paramedic's shopping while she drove the ambulance around the block a few times.

Re: Should the ambulance have got a parking ticket
what about in the (admittedly highly unlikely) case that another emergency service was blocked by an ambulance on break?

pure and simple - driver is in the wrong, though the warden could have been less of a klutz to avoid the situation.
